MacOSX 10.3 (Panther) Installation Help The software has been specifically tested on MACOSX10.3.2 (Darwin Kernel 7.2.0) but should run on any OSX10.3 version. The software will not work with MAC OS9 or less. To allow Mouse Atlas software to run on a MAC requires certain additional software to be installed first. The additional software allows UNIX programs to run on the desktop. Once this software is installed you will be able to run a wide range of open source software if you wish. On the other hand, if you know nothing about UNIX systems just follow the instructions below. If you need any help or advice please contact us. General Installation Instructions Installing MouseAtlas Software General Installation Instructions To get the additional packages will require a connection to the internet. You will need to have administrator privileges to install some software. To check that you have administrator privileges go to "System Preferences" and select "Accounts". All the software referred to is freely available without cost. Please pay attention to any license information that appears during installation. It is advisable to install the latest update to OSX to ensure that all new features are available and will work correctly, particularly with the X11 package. The download can be found at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple or may appear as a software update on your system like this -
Software update can be started from the apple menu. X11 is the software that enables the display of graphical unix applications. Apple now provide their version of X11 with the operating system installation CDs. However it does not install automatically unless you choose it from the customised installation. If you already have X11 installed on your computer you will see the application X11 in the Macintosh HD:Applications:Utilities folder (or search for it). If X11 is not installed on your computer you can install it from the operating system CDs that came with your computer. You can also download it from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/x11formacosx.html To install from the operating system CDs:- Insert the CD labelled Mac OS X panther version 10.3 Install Disc 3 Browse the CD folders to find the X11 installer
Open the X11User.pkg and follow the onscreen installation instructions. OpenMotif is the software that allows an application to be built out of panels, buttons and other "widgets" in X11 applications. The OpenMotif installer package is in the MACOSX folder on the CD-ROM. You can copy it from there to your local machine, or run it directly from the CD. The package can also be downloaded from The installer package looks like this:-
Click on the icon to install the package. Follow the instructions in the installer program. Installing MouseAtlas Software The MouseAtlas software is packaged in a similar way to the OpenMotif package. The MouseAtlas installer package is in the MACOSX folder on the CD-ROM. You can copy it from there to your local machine, or run it directly from the CD. The package can also be downloaded from The installer package looks like this:-
Click on the icon to install the package. Follow the instructions in the installer program. When the installer has completed, the software will have been installed in the unix directory /opt/MouseAtlas/bin
To run programs such as MAPaint, the X11 application must first be started from the Applications folder. With the default installation, X11 will start like this:-
The xterm window is similar to the Terminal application found in the Applications->Utilities folder. Graphical applications can be launched from the xterm command line as in traditional unix environments. For instance type /opt/MouseAtlas/bin/MAPaint and press <return>. The X11 application can be configured to launch programs from the menu. With X11 running select the Applications->Customize menu add an entry for MAPaint like this-
Now MAPaint will appear on the Applications menu and can be started from there without using the command line. If you need help with the CD-ROM please contact:- MRC Human Genetics Unit Phone +44 (0)131 332 2471 |
