Installing JavaHelp

The instructions for installing Java3D at the Sun java site require some knowledge of Windows, Unix Linux and Mac OS X installation conventions and operating systems. The following steps will work in all cases we have encountered, if they don't or if you don't understand the options below then please ask your computer administrator or email ma-tech@hgu.mrc.ac.uk.

Step1: Download

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/products/javahelp/download_binary.html#download.
  • Click on the button under "JavaHelp 2.0_02 (Zip)".
  • The License Agreement will pop up:
  • Read the conditions, and if you want to continue tick "Accept" and click "Continue".
  • On the new page click on "javahelp-2_0_02.zip, 6.49 MB". And save it to a folder on your machine.

Note the version number 2_0_02 is current at the time of writing and may differ as newer versions become available. Please install the most recent version you find at the download page given above.

Step 2: Extraction:

  • Windows:
Use Winzip to open "javahelp-2_0_02.zip" and extract all files to a directory on your machine. Locate the jhall.jar file, it should be in the "jh2.0\javahelp\lib" folder. "Winzip" can be downloaded from http://www.winzip.com.
  • Unix/Linux:
Change directory to where "javahelp-2_0_01.zip" is. Extracting the files, using the command "unzip javahelp-2_0_01.zip". Locate the jhall.jar file, it should be in the jh2.0/javahelp/lib folder.
  • Mac OS X:
On a standard configuration machine the zip file will have been unpacked automatically using "Stuffit Expander". If not then go to the download directory (usually /User/<username>/downloads) and double click on javahelp-2_0_02.zip. This will either bring up Stuffit Expander or you will be prompted to select an application, you can locate Stuffit Expander in Applications/Utilities. Locate the jhall.jar file, it should be in the jh2.0/javahelp/lib folder.

Step 3: Copy:
Locate the java runtime environment extension library folder.

  • Windows : The directory should be "C:\Program Files\Java\jreX.X.X\lib\ext". "X.X.X" is the version number. For example, "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0\lib\ext" is the latest version java runtime environment.
  • Unix/Linux: The directory should be "j2sdk1.5/jre/lib/ext".
  • Mac OS X: The directory should be "/Library/Java/Extensions".

Copy file "jhall.jar" to the Java extension library directory/folder. You may need to acquire administrator privileges for this. If you don't know what this means then ask the person who set up your computer.
Note: Under Windows and Unix/Linux you can search for the directory "ext" on the hard disk and copy "jhall.jar" to all such directories. This will include some redundancy but should not cause any harm.

Step 4: Finish and Restart:
If you have been directed here by trying to run an emap Java application then please close down the application. You can now start/restart the application.
